What are Infinity Pools?

An infinity pool, also known as a zero edge, disappearing edge, or vanishing edge swimming pool, functions like any other swimming pool, but an infinity pool is all about the visual effect.  The defining feature of an infinity pool is that at least one edge creates a visual affect where the water’s edge extends to the horizon.  It looks as if the edge vanishes to nothing, thus coining the word infinity.  Infinity pools commonly create the effect of being merged with a body of water in the background, such as a lake, ocean, or another swimming pool.

Planning and building this type of pool take extra time because the structure and mechanical detailing is more extensive, resulting in a larger final expense over a typical swimming pool.  Most of the time, the structural design depends on the geological structure and condition of the planned site.  One or more sides of the pool needs to be along a significant decline of the surrounding terrain, or be elevated in such as way as to help achieve the visual infinity effect.  A catch basin in built along the infinity edges, unseen by pool users, where the water that spills over the edge is reclaimed and circulated back into the swimming pool by the pool pump.
