What does In Solution mean for swimming pools?

The term in solution generally describes the condition of a material completely dissolved in another solution, typically water.  The material dissolved in water is typically not visible, although larger quantities can affect other aspects of the water properties, like hardness, pH, and alkalinity.  Saturation point of materials dissolved in water can vary, but once the saturation point is exceeded, extra material in the water does not remain in solution.  The material is basically free-floating in the water, and is often called out of solution.

For swimming pools it is important to know how various chemicals dissolve in water and what happens to the swimming pool water quality as material concentrations increase. Materials and chemicals out of solution tend to reduce the clarity of water, making the water murky or cloudy.  Excessive amounts of material can attach themselves to the walls, floors, and inside pool equipment and potentially cause reduced pool water flow through pipes, reduce filtering ability, and cause damage to equipment.
