What is Cyanurate Alkalinity in swimming pools?
Cyanurate alkalinity describes the alkalinity level in a solution attributed to by the presence of cyanurates. Cyanurates are salts of cyanuric acid, present in the water as alkaline ions. Depending on the pH level of the solution, cyanurate alkaline ions increase the cyanurate alkalinity of the water. Total alkalinity is the combination of both cyanurate alkalinity and carbonate alkalinity.
[sc:ad_middle]Cyanuric acid is often used as a chlorine stabilizer in outdoor swimming pools, where the acid bonds freely with chlorine, and minimizes decomposition of chlorine brought about by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. This process increases the amount of cyanurates present in the pool water. Measuring the swimming pool water cyanurate alkalinity is important to monitor, as keeping the cyanuric acid level in an ideal range benefits the addition of chlorine while avoiding high levels which can harm swimmers.
