What is a swimming pool Chlorine Neutralizer?

A chlorine neutralizer is defined as a chemical compound which is used to reduce or completely remove chlorine content in water.

After shocking swimming pools, or swimming pools that simply have a concentration of chlorine that is too high, a chlorine neutralizer can be used to quickly bring the chlorine level of the swimming pool down to acceptable levels.  Sodium thiosulfatesodium sulfite, and sodium metabisulfite are all compounds found in chlorine neutralizing products for swimming pools.  The correct amount of chlorine neutralizer needs to be added to pools with chlorine levels too high, as too much neutralizer will strip the pool water of all the available chlorine, remove any sanitizing capability of the pool, and risk growth of microbes, algae, and other harmful pathogens.

Keeping the swimming pool open in full sunlight will also neutralize swimming pool chlorine, as ultraviolet (UV) radiation quickly breaks the chemical bond of chlorine in the pool water, releasing the chlorine from the pool and decreasing overall chlorine levels.
