What is Sodium Sulfite for swimming pools?

Sodium sulfite is a sodium salt and easily dissolves in water.  Used in a variety of manufacturing and processing applications, especially where oxidation prevention is important.  It has been used in the food industry as a preservative of fruits, reducing their discoloration.

In swimming pools, sodium sulfite is used as the primary chemical in products used to quickly reduce the level of chlorine in pool water.  If a swimming pool has been recently shocked and the chlorine level is too high for safe swimming, a chlorine-reducing product containing sodium sulfite can reduce chlorine levels when used as directed.  When adding sodium sulfite to water after shocking, the pH level might increase slightly, or at least counteract the decrease in pH from adding a shock treatment.  Sodium sulfite has a pH of about 9.
