What are Filter Cartridges for swimming pools?

The primary purpose of a filter cartridge is to reduce the level of sediments, debris, and free-floating contaminates in water.  Used in the overall process of water filtration, filter cartridges come is a variety of sizes and shapes, although they all function along the same principle.  Water to be filtered is pumped through the filter cartridge medium.  Depending on the fineness of the filter material, free-floating materials in the water are caught by the filter cartridge, resulting in water that contains less undesired materials than had entered the filter.

In swimming pools, filter cartridges are often found in up-flow filtration systems, although some screen filters are used in smaller systems.  The particulate size that can be filtered out depends on the filter specification, and is usually measured in microns, although some particulate can be measured in parts-per-million (ppm).  Although inexpensive filters are meant to be disposed after they become clogged, other designs such as bag filters can be cleaned and reused multiple times.

There are two main designs of swimming pool filter cartridges; surface and depth filters.  Surface filters scrub the water of substances which block the surface of the filter. These are commonly made of thin materials such as paper and cloth.  Depth-type filters remove particles and contaminates of much smaller size.  Generally, the larger the filter size, the more water can flow through.  Filters are sized along with pool pump and water lines based on swimming pool volume and bather load.
