What is a swimming pool DE Filter?
A DE filter refers to the use of diatomic earth, also called diatomaceous earth, or diatomite, as a medium for filtering. Diatomite has high porosity, due to small, hollow particles, and typically can only be seen with the use of a microscope. The small, porous material has the capability to filter extremely fine particles which sometimes pass through other filtration methods. DE filters are typically used in water treatment processes and other liquid filtration applications.
[sc:ad_middle]DE filters are commonly used in swimming pools as a standalone filter, or part of a series of filters that catch increasingly small particles. They can trap particulate as small as 2 – 5 microns in size, and help prevent undesired materials, which may likely pass through filters, do not escape back into the swimming pool water. Although dedicated DE filters are used, the diatomite itself can be placed inside sand filters, where the DE material rests above the sand in the filter to give the sand filter an additional boost in filtering capability. Once the pool water is clear, the diatomaceous earth can be backwashed out of the filter.
