What is a Calcium Buffer Reagent?

A calcium buffer reagent is a substance used to determine and balance the calcium hardness in water samples by a process called titration.  Typically found as a liquid in swimming pool test kits, a calcium buffer reagent is added along with a calcium indicator reagent to a water sample.  The water sample will turn red, at which point a calcium hardness reagent is added drop-by-drop to the sample until the water sample turns blue.  The number of hardness reagent drops added to the sample indicate the calcium hardness level.

Calcium hardness should be managed together with pH and total alkalinity to ensure proper balanced water in swimming pools.  Standards in swimming pool water quality dictate that the ideal range for calcium hardness is 200-400 ppm in swimming pools.  Calcium Hardness affects the total quality of water.  High hardness can result in water becoming cloudy and produce water scale on pool surfaces, and low hardness can result in pool water becoming corrosive to concrete, stone, and metal surfaces.
