What is a Floating Thermometer for pools?

A floating thermometer is a device that floats freely in water indicating the swimming pool water temperature.  Some thermometers are also embedded in chlorine floaters, which can provide the pool water temperature as well as supply the pool water with chlorine.  They are usually made of nontoxic, pool-safe plastic, which protects the inner thermometer which may be made of glass.

Digital and wireless options exist as well.  Some are solar powered and others require batteries.  The advantage of using this type is that it allows the pool owner to monitor the temperature of water remotely through a digital display inside the house.  Advanced digital options include recording of data, including temperature trends over previous hours and days, ambient (air) temperature, and freeze warnings.

Floating thermometers must be removed from the pool water when winterizing the pool if located in climates where the water can freeze, as the floating thermometer can become damaged if it becomes frozen in ice.
