What is a swimming pool Diving Board?

A diving board, also known as a diving platform, is a structure used either for recreational or competitive diving.  It is made up of a tower, and one or more platforms extended horizontally over the deep end of a swimming pool.  The height of a diving board depends on its use.  Private swimming pools typically have recreational diving boards with a low tower height and are popular among children.  Competitive diving boards may have two or three levels, designed for standard diving heights and varieties of competition.

Recreational diving boards are often installed in a springboard configuration.  The board platform and tower contain springs, which provides an extra boost when jumping off the diving board.  Because of previous incidents of injuries caused by improper installation of home springboards, some local ordinances regulate their installation.  Homeowners insurance can also be affected if improperly installed diving boards are used.

Safety standards governing springboard height are common, as well as the distance above the pool and diving board.  Although swimming pool builders are expected to follow local building codes, home inspectors often include swimming pools in their home inspections.  Public and commercial pools typically do not include diving boards, as accident injury liability concerns discourage installation.

In cold climates, diving boards should be removed from the pool deck and stored over the winter to prolong diving board longevity as part of a swimming pool winterizing schedule.
