What is Diatomic Earth (DE) for swimming pools?

Diatomic earth, scientifically known as diatomaceous earth, is a soft, natural, and sedimentary rock which can be easily broken down into a white, fine powder.  The sizes of the particles usually range from 3 micrometers or less up to a size of more than one millimeter. The Diatomic earth in powder format has an abrasive feel which makes it a good quality for filtering aids.  Diatomic earth is light weight, as it is less dense from its high porosity.

Diatomic earth is often called DE in swimming pool terms, and is a good substance to use for water filtration applied during water treatment.  Its small particles make it possible for effective filtering of very fine dirt, debris, and organic particles, which may usually pass through an ordinary filtering system.  DE filter systems use diatomic earth as their chief filtering medium.

As a safety consideration, a breathing mask is recommended when working with diatomic earth products, as the person working with DE should not inhale the DE particles.
