What Chlorine Free mean for swimming pools?

Chlorine free generally describes a condition of something not containing chlorine.  Chlorine is an element with strong oxidizing capabilities and is used as an ingredient for general disinfectants and water sanitation, including mild algaecides and bactericides.

Adding chlorine to water is a process of water sanitation called chlorination, helping to make water fit for drinking or simply being exposed to it.  Adding chlorine to pool water is well established as common method of water sanitation.  If a swimming pool is chlorine free, then there needs to be an alternative form of sanitation.  Other sanitizers like bromine or biguanide are popular, and installable systems like mineral sanitizers, ozone generators, and ultraviolet (UV) systems are available.

Swimming pool owners need to be aware if a chemical added to the water contains chlorine or is chlorine free, as this will affect the sanitizing capabilities of the water and potentially alter the water balance.  Products will not always specifically list chlorine as an ingredient, as products like calcium hypochlorite (chlorine-based shock) actually contain high concentrations of chlorine.  Swimming pools that are chlorine free should not have chlorine added to it, as this will upset the water balance and negatively affect other sanitizers and sanitation methods present in the pool.
