What is Cationic Sanitation in swimming pools?

Cationic sanitation refers to a process of cleaning and sanitizing swimming pools with the use of a cationic surfactant.  The surfactant lowers the surface tension of a liquid, effectively making water wetter, enabling the sanitizer to reach all parts of the swimming pool and equipment to sanitize all surfaces effectively.  Quaternary ammonium compounds, also called Quats are cationic surfactants, and react with the cell walls of microbes. They are effective at some types of molds and algaes, and can reach small crevices in pool water lines and equipment where these organisms can grow.

Effective and thorough cleaning helps protect the health of water used in pools, as well as of swimmers who are using the pools.  The process of cleaning and sanitizing may involve the use of a variety of effective cleaning chemicals, as well as application methods.  Cationic sanitation is a method to remove contamination, surface dirt, algae growth, and bacteria and other microbe concentrations where other methods cannot reach.
